In 1967, the G.I. Joe team was on a particularly hairy mission when their leader, Joe Colton, was gravely injured. Jane Martelle was the nurse who tended to him, and her quick thinking and surgical skill saved Colton's life. When Colton told her he "owed her one," Martelle asked to join the team. She has been their nurse ever since, providing her medical skills on missions around the globe.
At first some of the guys weren't too keen on having a woman on the team. However, Lt. Martelle has proven herself over and over again, and has helped her teammates overcome dangerous situations on more than one occasion. To say that she has earned the team's respect is an understatement.
